Llevamos la ayuda a Pinar del Río [EN-ES]

Ayer fue un día con muchos altibajos, por un lado, sientes la satisfacción de poder ayudar a quienes lo necesitan y por otro te quedas con ese mal sabor de boca por no poder hacer más. Déjenme contarles mi experiencia mientras la electricidad me lo permita.

Ya a las 7:30am de ayer estábamos saliendo de La Habana rumbo a Pinar del Río, no es un viaje largo pero la poca disponibilidad de transporte y los altos precios de ello hizo difícil que fuéramos antes. Llevábamos comida enlatada, aseo y ropa que fuimos recaudando desde el último viaje. Al llegar, sobre las 9:30am, ya nos esperaban en la Asociación Hermanos Saiz un grupo de personas que creo vale mucho destacar la labor que están haciendo por toda su gente en Pinar, aun cuando varios de ellos también son afectados. Nada más llegamos y comenzamos a separar todo y crear pequeños módulos que unimos a otras donaciones que ellos tenían, para poder llegar a la mayor cantidad de personas posibles. Me llamo mucho la atención el hecho de que en menos de una hora llegaron al menos 3 personas más con comida y ropa para donar, es bueno saber que desde la misma provincia se ayudan.

Yesterday was a day with many ups and downs, on the one hand, you feel the satisfaction of being able to help those in need and on the other hand you are left with a bad taste in your mouth for not being able to do more. Let me tell you about my experience while electricity allows me to do so.

Already at 7:30am yesterday we were leaving Havana on our way to Pinar del Rio, it is not a long trip but the limited availability of transportation and the high prices made it difficult for us to go earlier. We were carrying canned food, toiletries and clothes that we had been collecting since the last trip. When we arrived, around 9:30am, a group of people were already waiting for us at the Saiz Brothers Association and I think it is worth mentioning the work they are doing for all their people in Pinar, even though several of them are also affected. We just arrived and began to separate everything and create small modules that we joined to other donations they had, in order to reach as many people as possible. I was very impressed by the fact that in less than an hour at least 3 more people arrived with food and clothes to donate, it is good to know that people from the same province are helping.

Conformados los módulos, cargamos todo en el transporte y nos dirigimos a Los Sitios, una pequeña comunidad a 14 kilómetros de la ciudad cabecera. Desde que salimos de la ciudad prácticamente no podías encontrar un poste de electricidad en buenas condiciones, si se veían linieros trabajando, pero falta muchísimo por hacer. Ya han pasado más de 15 días desde el huracán y aún existen postes encima de casas, cables caídos alrededor de las mismas casas y muchas casas derrumbadas parcial o totalmente, todo esto sin llegar aun a la comunidad.

Once the modules were formed, we loaded everything in the transport and headed to Los Sitios, a small community 14 kilometers from the main town. Since we left the city, you could hardly find an electricity pole in good condition, we could see linemen working, but there is still a lot of work to be done. It has been more than 15 days since the hurricane and there are still poles on top of houses, downed wires around the houses and many houses partially or totally collapsed, all this without even reaching the community.

Ya una vez en la comunidad, las personas se mostraban curiosas pero cautas al ver un auto particular y muchas personas saliendo de él. Nos dimos cuenta de que existían muchas cosas con problemas (varias con derrumbes totales) y otras no tanto. Es por ello que se tuvo que hacer un trabajo de campo para poder conocer quiénes eran las personas más necesitadas y poder entregar la ayuda a ellos pues, aunque no era poco lo que llevábamos, tampoco daba para ayudar a todos por más que quisiéramos. Yo me embarqué en este trabajo y así pude conocer las historias de estas personas que les puedo asegurar que hasta el corazón más duro termina volviéndose algo tan suave de todo lo que te cuentan. Sin haber entregado las cosas aun, habían personas que nos agradecían por el simple hecho de ir hasta su casa e interesarnos por su situación, según ellos en todos estos días eso no había pasado. Estas imágenes les puede dar una idea de la situación que poseen muchas personas que este pequeño poblado.

Once in the community, people were curious but cautious when they saw a private car and many people getting out of it. We realized that there were many things with problems (several with total collapse) and others not so much. That is why we had to do some field work in order to know who were the most needy people and to be able to deliver the help to them because, although we had not little, it was not enough to help everyone no matter how much we wanted to. I embarked on this work and so I was able to know the stories of these people that I can assure you that even the hardest heart ends up becoming something so soft from everything they tell you. Without having delivered the things yet, there were people who thanked us for the simple fact of going to their house and taking an interest in their situation, according to them that had not happened in all these days. These images can give you an idea of the situation of many people in this small town.

Estas personas fueron solo unas de las pocas que ayudamos y con los que durante el trabajo de campo pude conversar. Entre ellos se encuentra quien a golpe de lágrimas nos agradeció la ayuda en todo momento. Otros se encontraban aun tratando de salvar algunas cosas como sus televisores que se mojaron durante el huracán y mantienen la esperanza de que puedan seguir funcionando para el día que vuelvan a tener fluido eléctrico. La última foto es de una persona que me llamo la atención pues se me acerco solo para darnos la sugerencia de hacer pequeños módulos para poder abarcar más personas y no quiso ir a donde se estaba repartiendo todo pues sabía que existían muchas más personas con mayores problemas que él.

These people were only a few of the few that we helped and with whom I was able to talk during the field work. Among them was one who, with tears, thanked us for our help at all times. Others were still trying to save some things like their televisions that got wet during the hurricane and are still hoping that they will be able to continue working for the day that they will have electricity again. The last photo is of a person who caught my attention because he approached me just to give us the suggestion of making small modules to cover more people and did not want to go to where everything was being distributed because he knew that there were many more people with bigger problems than him.

El trabajo se hizo más fácil tras conocer a las personas, se comenzó a repartir las cosas que llevábamos a cada una de las personas que vimos con más problemas y a todos los que se fueron acercando en la medida de lo posible. Incluso se llevó hasta las cosas la ayuda a personas que por enfermedad o su edad no podía acercase a donde estábamos. Varios fueron los niños que además de comida pudieron tener algo de ropa de su talla para el día a día. Fue algo difícil ver como se iban acabando las cosas y aun habían personas que, aunque menor medida, seguían necesitando de ayuda.

The work became easier after meeting the people, we began to distribute the things we were taking to each of the people we saw with more problems and to all those who were approaching as far as possible. We even took things to help people who because of illness or age could not get close to where we were. There were several children who in addition to food were able to have some clothes of their size for the day to day. It was difficult to see how things were running out and there were still people who, although to a lesser extent, were still in need of help.

Solo me resta darle las gracias a todos los que hicieron esto posible, desde quienes donaron hasta las personas que nos ayudaron en Pinar del Río. Nuestra campaña de ayuda ya termina, pero si crees poder ayudar de alguna forma te podemos poner en contacto con ese grupo de héroes en la ciudad de Pinar que cada día están ayudando de forma voluntaria.
